The Crisis in Online Learning: A Way Forward with Gameworlds and Extended Reality
Online learning meets the needs of many people but has negative effects on others. I will discuss the ways in which online learning needs to evolve from its roots in the 1990s over 30 years ago. Gameworlds are simulated environments with reward schedules, immersion and other video game features which are driven by autopoesis and hyper reality. Learning models of the future need to include play, discovery, social engagement, narrative and meta narrative in order to drive retention. Our current work in the Ontario Ministry of Health, Long Term Care, the United Nations and the World Health Organization on projects related to gameworld learning will be reviewed.
